I was very pleased to give it to my niece for her birthday. My purchase was sent to me very quickly. It was packaged very well, and it was in perfect condition.
Well, it just wouldn't clip, leaving the wing wobbly and unable to be played with without it falling off immediately. Fortunately, a little surgery on the back assembly worked.
Long-awaited fifth birthday present salvaged and I have one happy little girl who is now snoozing with her arm around her new Mariposa doll. I used an exacto knife to hew off the plastic bit protruding out and once I did, the wing snapped in securely as it was clearly intended to do.
As others have noted, there seems to be a design flaw on the wing. It's clearly not intended to be there.
I will post a picture of what I did in case it helps others, assuming I can find a time when said five year old is not hugging it. Once the curved sockets on the wing hooks onto the body, you're supposed to pull the wing forward where a little retention clip on the wing snaps into the body (this is hard to describe in a review).
Upon inspection, there was a little extra bit of plastic blocking the wing from coming forward enough to engage the retention clip.
The wings are beautiful and capture fairy-magination of girls. On the wing falling off issue, I used this toy to as a teaching tool of treating things gently and with care. If they became frustrated by the toy I suggested that they need to play with care or change activities if they wanted to play rough. Yes, the wings come off, bhut it is not as bad or frustrating as some reviewers have complained. My daughters never "cried" about the wings falling off. Overall, it is a nice toy, it inspires fairy story making/roleplaying and is beautiful. The wings snap back on in about 10 seconds a wing. The doll is best for a 5+ child.
I see they now have Barbie Mariposa with smaller wings and I would imagine that is much better quality. Her tiara also broke. Barbie Mariposa is beautiful, yes, but her super-sized wings broke within five minutes of Barbie coming out of the package. My daughter was very sad about this at first, but still enjoys playing with her wingless Barbie.
My 6 year old daughter LOVES this doll and walks around with it everywhere. Her enjoyment was worth the 20 bucks. After a few days of snapping the wings back on every 5 minutes my husband decided to glue them on permanently. In spite of the wing problem I'm glad we bought it for her. He used some super duper glue but they have stayed on- heaven. I was skeptical but my daughter agreed to it. It has worked out beautifully.
